Andrea Dovizioso leading 2017 MotoGP ahead of San Marino GP
It took 2 consecutive race wins to prompt Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso to take the lead in the 2017 MotoGP championship standings! Two races ago (after the Czech Republic Grand Prix), Dovizioso was trailing Marc Marquez (1st) and Maverick Vinales (2nd) in the overall championship with a 21 points deficit.
The Austrian Grand Prix marked Dovizioso third victory, with Repsol Honda Marquez finishing second and Yamaha Vinales only sixth. Whereas at the British Grand Prix, Vinales finished second, Marquez failed to finish and Dovizioso got his fourth victory of the season.
Ducati is now leading the way ahead of San Marino! When we look at the championship progression:
1) Movistar Yamaha Maverick Vinales was leading at the beginning of the season, but now faces greater competition from the Hondas and Ducatis.
2) Repsol Honda Marc Marquez started the season on the back foot, but Honda has improved. The Spaniard was leading the championship until the Austrian round.
3) Ducati and Andrea Dovizioso have found in the last 2 races the good formula - can they repeated in San Marino? We have to consider that in both Germany and Czech Republic, they did not find their best performance.
4) What of Rossi and Lorenzo? Movistar Yamaha Valentino Rossi has been very consistent throughout the year but could only materialize 1 win so far - additionally he is now trying to recover from a broken leg (unfortunately). Ducati Jorge Lorenzo has improved resulting in top 5 finishes in the last 2 races - but not yet to a level that he can challenge for race wins.

In the overall rankings, Marc Marquez continues to be king, 6 pole positions to his name - he is quick out of the box in every round - but the Honda lacks the race pace - you bet that Marquez will improve - he is the current champion!
