Jorge Lorenzo and the Ducati Desmosedici 2017
2017 Sepang MotoGP test (Jan 30th to Feb 1st) showed the first glimpse of Jorge Lorenzo and his new Ducati Desmosedici 2017. The Ducati team was present with both Jorge Lorenzo and teammate Andrea Dovizioso plus MotoGP legend Casey Stoner and test rider Michelle Pirro. You can tell all efforts are there to make Ducati successful again - keep mind that Audi AG is behind Ducati through Automobili Lamborghini subsidiary. Go Ducati Go!
Day 1 of testing showed that both Stoner and Dovizioso were fast out of the gate. Lorenzo was +1.60 seconds behind, but the Spaniard was positive: "the first is to gradually adapt the bike to the way I like it, and the second and more important, is to know how to do that and understand how to be quicker..."
Unfortunately Day 1 started dry but racing was interrupted due to rain. Stoner was faster than Dovizioso, too bad Stoner is only a test rider for 2017!
Day 2 was mixed results for all teams/riders, as the torrential rain that fell overnight at Sepang left the surface of the Malaysian circuit very damp until early afternoon. As such lap times did not improve from Day 1. Overall (and due to the rain) Dovizioso and Lorenzo were in the 2 minutes followed by test rider Michelle Pirro.
Lorenzo confirmed that "...improved the general set-up of the Desmosedici GP and in addition I could see that what I thought yesterday was correct: I only need a bit more time and to do a lot of laps to get even closer to the top and to my limit with this bike..."
On Day 3 the track was dry until around 3 pm at Sepang. Andrea Dovizioso went fastest for Ducati followed by Casey Stoner with only +0.086 seconds difference. Jorge Lorenzo improved to 1m59.767s - which is under the 2 minute mark and fastest than Dovizioso Day 1 lap time - very encouraging for the Spaniard!
Lorenzo confirmed that "...getting closer and closer to my potential, even though I’m still missing something. The whole team is really motivated, and we are working well together. In the last three days we accumulated a lot of useful information to further improve the Desmosedici..."
BTW: Lap times during these tests can not confirm the real racing order, they are useful information to analyze but please take this as grain of salt.
